Introduction

It is our pleasure to invite you to join the fourth edition of the M.S. Yalin Memorial Colloquium 2027 (YMC 2027), organized under the auspices of the Fluvial Hydraulics Committee of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR).

The M.S. Yalin Memorial Colloquium includes a limited number of participants in order to create a friendly environment for reflection, discussion and exchange of knowledge of advanced topics in memory of Professor M. Selim Yalin, widely known for his contributions in hydraulic physical modeling, sediment transport and river mechanics.

The present edition places special emphasis on mixing processes in rivers, fundamental mechanisms governing the distribution of substances, energy, and momentum within flowing water systems. These processes critically impact water quality, ecosystem health, and material transport in river environments. They maintain water quality by distributing oxygen for aquatic life, transporting sediments and nutrients to facilitate key ecosystem processes, regulating temperature distribution, and creating diverse habitats that support various species. Thus, understanding river mixing processes is critical for adapting to climate change impacts on river systems, restoring and conserving river ecosystems and managing water resources, as well as designing effective remediation strategies.

YMC 2027 offers a valuable opportunity to explore these processes and their effects on fluvial ecosystems within the context of climate change. The event will foster discussion and learning among young and senior researchers and practitioners.

After the Colloquium, written versions will be published in a guest-edited Special Issue.
